Go back to Opel Speedster 2.2 16v

Move horn

Like many Speedster drivers, I've had a bit of a problem with the location of the buttons for the horn. When driving a bit more enthousiastic they can get in the way and you'll beep the horn. Time to think of a solution for this.

My idea was to move the horn to the leaver for the windscreen wiper. I looked at other Opel models where they might have extra buttons on the leavers. And I found one which has e replacement for both leavers (windscreen wiper and indicator). The indicator stalk has buttons for cruise control and the windscreen wiper one for an onboard computer. So I would have 5 buttons extra.

I did modify the stalks. All the buttons now have their own ground. So now it is possible to run any kind of signal through them without interference.

Time to place them in the car. Remove the caps from the steeringwheel (this is pretty easy for me, because I had the screws removed that are behind the steeringwheel).

You can slide the old stalks out. When you see them next to the new ones you can see the difference in thickness.

Then you have to remove the airbag unit to get at the original horn cabling. Disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes. The the airbag can be removed (twee bolts left and right of the steering wheel).

Disconnect the connector that goes to the two buttons on the steering wheel.

At the ignition cut open the cable protection so you can reach the cables.

Now we have to connect the switch to this wiring. Don't cut the two cables but run the connector cables parallel to them. That way it is easy to start using the old buttons again.

Solder the wires from the new switch to the two stripped wires.

Build everything back. The button on the windscreen wiper stalk is now the horn.
